Becoming a Member of Communities in Bloom Alberta is easy! Communities have the choice of being evaluated by our Evaluation Team of judges or not. The spirit of Communities in Bloom is Growing Great Places Together – that is our goal!

Provincial judges evaluate the communities on the six program criteria and award a bloom rating from 1 to 5 blooms (5 being the highest ranking). A provincial awards ceremony held in the fall celebrates the communities with a certificate of their bloom rating.

Communities reaching the 5 Bloom rating may be invited to participate in the following year’s Canadian National Communities in Bloom edition – recommended from CiB Alberta to CiB National.

The Quiet Explorer!

In 2025 we launched a pilot project called The Quiet Explorer. This program is for registered non-evaluated member communities.   As our judging team travels about Alberta this summer we have the opportunity to visit many communities – sometimes it’s a simple drive through, sometimes we are in a community for a day or more.    The Quiet Explorer project allows our judging team members to take a look at a community, like a tourist might, and reflect on the community.  Every community has fabulous attributes – we want to see and recognize those!  This is NOT an evaluation, but rather a set of observations from very discerning eyes!  A paragraph or two, maybe a picture, that describes the observations.   From the community’s perspective there is no set date or time – you won’t know when a Quiet Explorer is visiting your community.

Communities register in one of several categories each year, beginning in January:

  • Member Community – for communities to join us, but not participate in the evaluation process. The Quiet Explorer is included at no additional cost. Please see more information in the Communities in Bloom Alberta Program Guide
